Fish Tales

Fish Tales

The dawn’s light breaks on Hickory Bay,
golden start to a brand new day.
We board the charter boat with glee,
our fishing adventure at sea.

We troll the waters just offshore,
as I select the perfect lure.
Bright sun glistens on my new rod,
while I dream of grouper and cod.

I bait my hook and cast my rig.
I feel a tug, it’s something big.
But my line snaps, the bait is gone;
there’s something fishy going on!

I cast again, another spin…
I think I spot a blue marlin!
Another tug that stirs my fears:
I reel it in, it disappears.

By noon, I put my rod aside
and try to nurse my damaged pride.
I bask in sun’s serenity
and praise the wonders of the sea.

As gentle waves lull me to sleep,
a dolphin appears from the deep.
Splashing and playful as an imp,
I toss him my leftover shrimp.

Pelicans dive and seagulls cry
on canvas of cornflower sky.
They beg for food in deep despair,
but I have nothing left to spare.

The day is long, the sun sinks low;
empty nets with nothing to show.
It was the fishing trip from hell,
at least I have fish tales to tell.

Happy Saturday! I’m late getting my poem in this week. As most of you know, I work in the tax department of a regional accounting firm, so with the April 15 tax deadline looming, I have been super busy at work filing extensions and doing payroll tax returns. I haven’t been online much to catch up or do daily challenges. Recently I’ve been doing additional work on tax returns, as well. It’s a great experience, but I’ll be glad when this month is over so I can get back to a normal schedule!

This poem took me back to a family vacation on Kiawah Island in South Carolina way back in 2003. On this vacation, Dan, Vince and I took a charter fishing boat out off the shores of South Carolina, and pretty much came up with a big fat nothing as far as catching any fish! After a while, I just gave up on fishing and concentrated on the beauty and wonders of the ocean, which always fills me with joy and serenity. I snapped photos and took in the serene beauty. It was still a lot of fun being out on the water together and taking in the beautiful sights of the sea and the creatures there.

Thinking back makes me realize that I’m in desperate need of a vacation at the beach! Dan and I are hoping to make plans for sometime in July, somewhere south where we can relax on the beach and possibly do a little fishing. In the meantime, sending love to all and hope you all have a great weekend!

Xoxo,
Colleen
