Let Kindness Reign

Let Kindness Reign

The clock strikes twelve, New Year is nigh,
our hopes and dreams are soaring high.
We lay our bitter thoughts away…
It’s a new day with a new way.

We step from shadow into light,
our hearts unarmed, our vision bright.
The sun erases skies of gray…
It’s a new day with a new way.

Let vengeance fall upon its knees,
let kindness reign like healing seas.
Feel peace flow as you bow to pray…
It’s a new day with a new way.

The clock strikes twelve, New Year is nigh…
It’s a new day with a new way.

Happy New Year, family and friends! We had such a wonderful time in Florida with our kids and grandkids, meeting new grandson Holland and making memories with everyone. We arrived home on New Year’s Eve, and the cats were happy to welcome us home. After unloading the packed car, we made a run to the grocery store for basics and our New Year’s Eve tradition of champagne, jumbo shrimp and hors d’oeuvres.

I started this poem on the drive home and finished it on New Year’s Day. I was too busy to post it then, as I made our traditional good luck dinner of roast pork, spaetzle noodles, sauerkraut and gravy. Even though Dan and I have been feeling under the weather, it was delicious and a great way to kick off 2026. There’s no place like home and sleeping in your own bed!

I don’t make resolutions; instead I try to choose a word for the year. I was leaning toward “kindness,” the theme of this sonnet. Last year I chose “light,” but it wasn’t as light as I hoped. In 2024 I chose both “joy” and “kind,” and in 2023 “calm.” I don’t remember what I chose prior to that. Because 2025 was unbalanced and full of disarray, I am going to choose “serenity” for 2026. It’s a word that means a lot, since I am in a constant search for serenity to get through the difficult times of life. I hope you also find serenity and peace in the next year. That may involve tuning out of social media, avoiding drama, not engaging in pointless arguments, practicing self-care, meditation, exercise, doing what makes you happy. Have a Happy New Year! Xoxo

Love,
Colleen
