In September Dreams
Restless summer, relentless heat,
resolve is burning down in flames.
Their shadows searching in the night,
don’t even know each others’ names.
Music drifts down the boulevard
and so the ritual begins.
The smell of wine and cheap perfume,
quintessentially feminine.
Drums match the rhythm of their hearts,
slow dancing on pale clouds of love.
Guitar riffs float across the bay,
amber moon watches from above.
Silence breaks in the lonely dawn,
for nothing’s ever as it seems.
When the summer’s gone, she’ll be there
waiting in your September dreams.

Happy Thursday! This poem is VERY LATE! It was a post that was started last Sunday, due this past Saturday and I’m just finishing up tonight. I’m determined to finish something that I start! But what a wild and wonderful week this has been for me. I have made two quick out of town trips since last Friday, and I slept in a hotel 3 out of 6 days. That may seem like nothing to most people, but it’s a bit much for a homebody like me!
Last weekend was my high school class 45th reunion! It is so hard to believe we are in our 60’s now. I was one of the Reunion Committee members, and two of my responsibilities were to create a playlist of 70s/80s music, and to create a video tribute to our classmates who have passed. I did a video 5 years ago and everyone seemed to enjoy that one, so I did a different spoken word poem of my own, “Light Ascending”, with the classmates photos and music timed. It was an enjoyable evening for all, and how wonderful to catch up with these amazing friends! I went up to Hagerstown, MD and stayed at a hotel nearby so that I could help with the setup and getting the audio/video working along with some friends. We had a Happy Hour Friday night at a local tavern, and the event at a beautiful farm Bed & Breakfast. Then I went and visited with my Mom on Sunday. All in all, a very fun and amazing weekend!
Yesterday, Dan and I drove into Washington, DC for the night and stayed at our favorite Hotel Monaco, which is now a Kimpton. What an absolutely beautiful, historic hotel! We were there for the Duran Duran concert, and Lord what a night! We had dinner at The Smith, went to our hotel happy hour in the lounge, and then made our way over to the Capital One Center. There were two opening acts, Bastille (which I’ve heard of but don’t know their songs), and then Nile Rogers with Chic! Now that set was un-freaking-believable! He really got the crowd going with a medley of the songs he’s written for other performers ‘ “Le Freak”, “Let’s Dance,” “We Are Family,” “Rapper’s Delight,” and “Like A Virgin,” to name a few. Needless to say, I was dancing my ever-loving 70’s girl ass off. I must have really impressed one of the ushers, she came up and hugged me and said “Girl, you got the moves!”
And then, when Duran Duran came on – I never stopped! We were on our feet the entire time – dancing, singing, cheering, crying!! Well, I was definitely crying a few times … Ordinary World, Come Undone and Save a Prayer just get to me every time. The band still had amazing synergy and sound, and there were only a few of their newer songs which I did not know every single word to. Simon LeBon was absolute perfection, still as handsome and charming as any lead singer could be. The crowd was really rocking, and ended a little after 11. I logged 20,000 steps and burned around 700 calories at that concert!
Now we’re back home and taking it easy. For two old geezers, we do like our concerts, parties and indulgences, but we do require a little more recovery time these days, haha! This weekend, I’m doing absolutely NOTHING! We are staying at home, not even visiting a winery! On second thought, I should be feeling rested by Sunday, so maybe an outing to Otium Cellars is a possibility. Have a great week, all!
Xoxo, Colleen
Inspiration: “Lights” by Journey
Ecrits Blogophilia Week 10.15 – September Dreams
Hard Bonus: Incorporate a song title or lyric by Journey (“their shadows searching in the night”; “the smell of wine and cheap perfume”; “when the summer’s gone she’ll be there.”)
Easy Bonus: Use the word “quintessentially”

Ha, I love the smell of wine and cheap perfume!! Reminds me of my days cruising Galactic Boulevard and hanging out with some hot Venusians. A very cool ode to young and carefree love – KUDOS Earthling! ❤
