Need to Write

Need to Write

The need to write
presses firmly against my thin skin,
a faint thrum beneath the surface.
Like a Fresnel lens bending light,
my thoughts refract – sharp,
yet scattered and fragmented.

Patience lurks within the shadows,
an uninvited guest,
silent and stalking.
Each line waits to be caught,
each word shaped and molded,
emotions spilled in ink.

Deep in the winter hush,
time slows and unfolds
as the sun surrenders to pink twilight.
The ache in my soul swells and subsides
like the ocean tide drawn to the shore,
always present, never still.

Happy Saturday, everyone! It’s a beautiful day and the wind is finally blowing here, which is helping to push many of our fallen leaves up into the conservancy area behind our property. This is a unmowed wooded area, which grows wild and is home to deer and other animals. I spent a lot of time raking up leaves 2 weeks ago in our front yard, only for many more to fall after, haha! It’s the price I pay for my love of trees, I guess. Worth it, though!

My little Bobby Moonlight was very sick with an upper respiratory infection this past week. He was feverish, sluggish and not eating. Bobby is a bit feral, just scared and hesitant to be picked up – but the sweetest little cat. Getting him in the carrier to take him to the vet is a nearly impossible, stressful task – for all of us. We had to cancel one appointment because we spent 1.5 hours chasing him around (after giving him Gabapentin – which did NOTHING.) I rescheduled for the next day, determined to get him in the carrier even if he scratched up my arms. He was sleeping in one of the bedrooms, Dan tried to block off around the bed, we closed the door and I tried to gently grab him….but he instinctively knew. He managed to dive under the bed anyway, went up in the box springs. It took me spraying water, prodding him out from the box spring with a broom… He finally bolted into the closet, where the carrier was. I quickly closed the door and after 10 minutes, found him curled up in the corner and managed to put him in the carrier!

Bobby was a very good patient at the vet, scared and trembling, but not mean or hissing. He is very tiny, but he lost 1.5 lb since the last visit due to not eating several days. They did a full exam, took blood, gave him fluids, antibiotic shots and an anti-emetic injection for his lack of appetite. When we got home, Rudy began hissing and growling at him! He either did not recognize him, or the smells from the vet office were freaking Rudy out. (There was waiting room full of dogs, and Bobby was the only cat.) These two are a bonded pair (not from the same litter) that curl up together, play and groom each other. We consulted Dr. Google and our vet, who wanted to bring Rudy in to put him on anti-anxiety meds, but decided to try re-introducing them ourselves. We learned that cats recognize each other by smell, not sight, so Bobby was like a strange cat to Rudy after the vet visit. We’ve had cats for 20 years, and have never experienced this. Needless to say, it’s been stressful in our household. But it’s improved, the hissing is almost gone, they can eat side by side, and Rudy is back to smelling Bobby’s butt. In know — gross, but that’s what cats do with their housemates and a sign of progress, LOL.

So, off to start putting up my Christmas decorations since we leave for Florida on November 25….time is ticking! Happy weekend, all!

Xoxo,
Colleen

  1. Nicely done! Your poem encapsulates that always present desire of the writer to release emotions in ink. KUDOS Dear Earthling and hope your kitty gets to feeling better! ❤

Your poem perfectly illustrates the need to poets to write, it was beautiful. Sorry to hear about your kitty (love the name!). I hope he’s feeling better soon and am glad that Rudy is getting comfortable with him again.

And I used to think it would be cool to be a cat sometimes, but then you just reminded me of the butt-sniffing part lol!
