Like the Daffodil
spring daffodils bloom
lifting their faces sunward
basking in warm grace
when dark clouds gather
raindrops kiss their golden cheeks
they bow, yet endure
we are born of love
our souls brimming with kindness
your heart knows the way
instinct takes the lead
guiding us to warmth and light
like the daffodil

Happy Weekend! Spring has finally sprung! My daffodils are in full bloom, and there is birdsong everywhere. I love to take a walk up the ridge of my backyard and see the fruits of my labor over the past 13 years of planting spring bulbs every fall. The many trees that we have planted are also starting to bud – Red Maples, Kwanza Cherries, Asian Pear and Crepe Myrtles. My lone and mighty oak is always the last to bloom. I feel so blessed and lucky to have such a wonderful little piece of heaven to take care of. It is our haven, and it truly brings a sense of serenity and peace for us.
I love the metaphor of the daffodil, it emanates light even on the grayest of days, like today. It is always stretching to the sun, hangs its head in the rain, and is always graceful. But it perseveres and comes back stronger each year. That is what I love about them most. I try to plant about 60 or 70 new bulbs each year, so that my yard is an explosion of colors every spring. Plus – the deer don’t bother them, although a few crafty critters have been known to steal the bulbs right out of the ground!
I hope you find some beauty in spring wherever you are. Enjoy!
Xoxo,
Colleen
