Summer Beckons

Summer Beckons

Summer beckons at my window,
the orange sun setting way down low.
Curtains ruffle in evening breeze,
sparking my childhood memories.

Radio tunes float in the air,
shopping downtown with sixties flair.
Ice cream swirls at the Tastee Freez,
sparking my childhood memories.

Humid nights playing kick the can
eggs frying up in cast iron pan.
Sprint through sprinklers, outrunning bees,
sparking my childhood memories.

Summer beckons at my window,
sparking my childhood memories.

Hello and Happy Saturday! Well, it’s almost Saturday night by the time I’m posting this. Another busy week at work, with little free time. We had a nice Easter Sunday last week with family, with plenty of good food and memory making. Hope you did, too!

This topic certainly brought back some memories of my childhood in the sixties. My Mom had this little radio in our avocado green kitchen on Guilford Avenue, and so many memorable tunes were played on that static filled old radio! “Downtown,” “Rose Garden,” “Winchester Cathedral,” “Mrs. Robinson,” “Happy Together,” “Harper Valley PTA,” “Midnight Confessions,” and “Classical Gas” were just a few that come to mind… Our home was always filled with classical or pop music, either from that little radio or from the box stereo in the living room (which if I recall correctly, also may have been on the cutting edge with an 8 track player).

The weeks leading up to summer in my youth were especially exciting and memorable. I wish I could bottle up that pure joy and excitement at being free in the summertime as a child, no cares at all in the world – just playing in our little backyard and the alley, which seemed like a huge kingdom. Each day we awoke, brimming with energy. We felt like princes and princesses, rulers over all the land. Funny, looking back on it – we actually had very little in the way of possessions and toys. But we had enough of the basics that a kid needs – a basement, boxes, bikes, balls, chalk, skates, and most importantly – a creative imagination! So yes, I do look back very fondly on those beautiful, simpler times. Seems like just yesterday, but I am grateful because my upbringing blended with rich, cherished childhood memories has made me the woman, mother and Nanny Bee that I am today. 🙂

I honestly could not ask for anything more in life – and I am eternally grateful to my Mom and Dad! Much love to all of you as we await the arrival of summer in about 6 weeks. ❤

Xoxo,
Colleen

I loved this, poem the poem and the memories. Brought back memories of my running through the sprinklers, and swimming in our backyard doughboy pretending we were mermaids and playing underneath our huge weeping willow. Thanks for sparking those memories 💙

  2. A lovely sonnet tribute to childhood memories, and a timeless song indeed! KUDOS Dear Earthling! ❤
