Rescue Smile
A wounded heart, scored and shattered,
pain relentless, tears unending.
I faced each day with plastic smiles,
endless charade of pretending.
It was a futile search for love,
looking in all the wrong places.
Then I spotted your hazel eyes
shining in a sea of faces.
Sailor with your rescue smile,
come and stay with me awhile.
In this cottage by the sea,
share your destiny with me.
I cast away my deepest fears
sailing o’er the turquoise ocean.
We skimmed the waves, so light and free,
stirring up some deep emotions.
The sun descended, trailing gold
as stars bloomed in indigo skies.
Your gentle lips caressed my face,
we melted in a hush of sighs.
Sailor with your rescue smile,
come and stay with me awhile.
In this cottage by the sea,
share your destiny with me.
Hold me, touch me, I’ll make you mine
Kiss me, love me, ‘til the end of time.
Sailor with your rescue smile,
come and stay with me awhile.
In this cottage by the sea,
share your destiny with me.

Happy Saturday, and Happy Mother’s Day Weekend to all the Moms! I started this little ditty/song/poem a few weeks ago. I first came up with the title “Rescue Smile” and the refrain. It ended up being an ode to the start of my relationship with Dan way back in September 1987. It was our first date, a long weekend in Florida. At the time, he co-owned a boat with a friend. We took the boat out for a little jaunt out on the Atlantic Ocean offshore, just outside of Ft. Lauderdale. It was so beautiful, the ocean was a breathtaking turquoise color, and the seagulls were crying and flying overhead. I can’t describe the feeling of freedom that welled up inside being out there, just the two of us. After years of hurt and pain, my walls were breaking down, my resolve was melting. I felt so safe and so cherished – for the first time in my life.
I think we both knew after that first date, that we were meant for each other and would spend our lives together. I will never forget that day – his smile was my rescue smile. He picked me up and rescued me from the numbing life that I was living, and for the first time, I experienced a true and loyal love. I am so grateful and blessed for the life we have built together. And it all started 38 years ago. Thank you Dan, for taking that chance and calling me in the summer of 1987. You truly rescued me. I love you!
Xoxo,
Colleen
