Sailing
tangerine sunrise
salt brine thickens morning air
sea breeze ruffles hair
ocean waves lapping
gentle rhythm against hull
blank canvas unfolds
white mainsail unfurls
triangular flags flutter
tall mast keeps balance
casting off from port
we ride the westerly gusts
through the wind-cut swells
but dark clouds portend
lightning rakes the distant sky
as the storm bears down
Captain, my Captain
keeper of our destiny
steer us to the light
darkness fade to mist
as the turbid water calms
and we’re free at last

Happy Memorial Day weekend! I hope this weekend you can relax and most importantly, remember those who gave all in the service of our country. It is such a somber day when you think about it, so let’s make time to remember those who valiantly served and made the ultimate sacrifice of their own lives for our country.
I have been on plenty of boats, but I have never gone on a sailboat. I like to imagine the freedom of being out on the water, with only the waves, the wind and the sun to guide you. I am very intrigued by those people who are brave enough to go on true sailing expeditions, braving the challenges of the open sea and all the creatures and storms out there. It’s fun to imagine, but it’s not for me. I guess I’m more of a landlubber haha!
There is something so romantic and freeing about it, so it’s fun to let my imagination run free and explore. The rest of my weekend, I’ll probably just work out in my garden doing some weed-pulling and mulching. (Big fun – but good exercise!) It’s going to be way TOO COLD to go to the pool for their Memorial Day opening.
Have a blessed weekend!
Xoxo,
Colleen

Bonus: Mention a mythical captain (like Captain Crunch, Captain Jack Sparrow, etc)
Easy Bonus: Incorporate a sailboat

Well done – this haiku series conveys lovely imagery and emotions! Makes one long for a journey on the sea. KUDOS Dear Earthling! ❤
