the smell of fresh baked croissants
infusing senses
sipping espresso
on red bamboo café chairs
chocolat kisses
ambient muzak
echoes in Le Louvre tunnels
beneath city streets
vendors hawking goods
chasing pigeons in the square
of the Montmartre hills
cold marble statues
deny their stark histories
as rain falls softly
oh, City of Lights
you are always in my heart
je t’aime pour toujours

Hello, this is a very quick haiku series for this week’s challenge. Thinking of all the different Johnny Depp movies took me in this direction. One of his most underrated movies was “Chocolat,” a romantic comedy which took place in France. We really enjoyed this movie! I’ve always been fascinated with Paris and French culture, after learning French in middle and high school. Maybe I missed my calling and should have been a flight attendant or a travel agent so I could visit Paris more often, but it was not to be.
Watching that movie reminded me of our trip to Paris in 2002, which left an indelible mark on my heart. We were only there for four nights, but were able to visit The Eiffel Tower, The Louvre, Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur, Montmarte (most charming to me!). We also had some memorable cab drivers, including a Wesley Snipes look-alike with black driving gloves who took us to Montmartre. But the most wonderful memory was when it started to rain on the Champs-Élysées, and I insisted that we walk the several miles (or more) back to our hotel rather than take a cab. Everyone was so mad at me, what but an adventure that was, exploring the winding streets, taking black and white photos and stopping at a random brasserie for steak frites and wine. It’s a memory that I hold dear and one that I will never forget!
Paris, I hope that I return to you soon to make more special memories! Je t’aime pour toujours!
