At First Frost

At First Frost

Dew
frozen
on grass blades
first frost comes late
crunching under boots
sudden change of seasons
as December tumbles down
cold air clashes with bitter winds
bare branches of the maples tremble
scored and stripped of their remaining brown leaves
alabaster clouds gather overhead
signaling their steely intentions
a gentle hush comes over me
white snow speaks in silent tongues
releasing pristine flakes
and I breathe deeply
as time stands still
winter draws
ever
nigh
