Melancholy Moon
Melancholy moon
rising in the twilight skies
soothing to my weary eyes
your glow lights up the horizon for miles.
I can see your smile
brightest beacon in the night
guiding me from wrong to right
like a healing balm on an endless day.
Shades of black and gray
clouds portend the very start
of our world falling apart
as the raging waves sweep this heavy heart.
The sun is behind us, no turning back
as the day fades to black.
Melancholy moon
hide away the pain and strife
voices that cut like a knife
bad memories that scatter in the wind.
Listen, my old friend
lines of worry etch your face
youth is gone, without a trace
our lives are changing like the tide and time.
No reason or rhyme
today is our destiny
release your anxiety
and cast your troubles to the raging sea.
The sun is behind us, no turning back
as the day fades to black.
My melancholy moon,
she sings a solemn tune
and she’s telling all her secrets
no more shame, no more regrets…
Reflecting on opportunity costs
choices made in the deep of night
keep the faith, do not lose sight
remember all is not lost…
Melancholy moon
sitting on your perch afar
dancing with the golden stars
as carefree as a gentle summer day.
I just want to say
I am thankful that you cared,
grateful for the love you shared
I’ll treasure our friendship until the end.
Now as dawn ascends
find the strength to rise again
wash away the hurt and pain
release your tears like soothing ruby rain.
The sun is behind us, no turning back
as the day fades to black.

Happy Saturday! I was mulling over a couple of ideas for a poem this week, but put them aside as I sifted through Roxette lyrics. I had no clue this 80’s group had such beautiful lines, and I was genuinely inspired by them! I decided to further challenge myself by writing my poem to a song’s strict composition of stanzas, syllable and rhyme scheme. (Why do I do this? Gah, becauseI like a challenge and am usually satisfied with the results!) For some reason, the song “Vincent (Starry Starry Night)” by Don McLean was stuck in my head since yesterday. Maybe because I talked to my son Vince! 😀
So this morning I downloaded the Vincent lyrics and studied the format – I never realized how difficult, complex and how BRILLIANT that song is! I actually enjoy writing this way – it’s like putting a puzzle together. The words just seemed to flow seamlessly. The Roxette lyrics and the topic of friendship combined easily with my lunar muse, Melancholy Moon. I hope you like it, it’s a tribute to growing old, enduring friendship, love and resilience. And a reminder to keep rising up every morning to start anew, no matter how dar the day seems!
Not much new around here, except this past week was unbearably hot – 105 degree heat index one day…ugh! 😛 I’m sick of the heat and so ready for autumn to get here. Fortunately, we got some rain last night that broke the high temperatures. It’s supposed to be rainy and gloomy most of this Labor Day weekend. So if you know me… I’m breaking out all my autumn decorations this weekend! That’s all I’ve got for now. Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend, everyone!
Xoxo,
Colleen
Inspiration: “Vincent (Starry Starry Night) by Don McLean
Ecrits Blogophilia Week 9.16 – Friendship Karma
Hard Bonus: Mention the law of opportunity costs
Easy Bonus: Include a lyric by the Roxettes (“The tide and the time”; voices that cut like a knife”; “ she’s telling all her secrets”; “wash away the pain/like ruby rain”)

Oh my! That was quite epic – beautifully done and so glad the Roxette lyrics and “Vincent” inspired you so! KUDOS Dear Earthling! ❤
