Cutty Sark On Ice
lost in the chaos
drinking our troubles away
Cutty Sark on ice
whispers in the night
stoking fears in hollow heart
as tragedy strikes
in the aftermath
evil lurks in dark shadows
and nothing makes sense
looking for reasons
in the wasteland of my mind
hidden in plain sight
soon the sun will rise
shake off the dust and hope for
better tomorrows

Happy Saturday everyone! It’s been a crazy couple of weeks worrying first about Hurricane Helena, then Hurricane Milton, both of which hit Florida and caused so much devastation there and in other states. Having lived in Florida for 24 years and going through the drill of many hurricanes from Andrew to Katrina to Wilma, I fully understand the stress and anxiety in preparing for a storm. I also can relate to the despair one experiences in the aftermath. That was a huge factor in our decision to move to northern VA over 12 years ago, but both of my kids stayed in Florida and are raising their families there. To be honest, I think I get more anxious now when a storm is on their horizon! Why? I figured out when you are preparing for a storm, you go into an adrenaline preparation kind of mode and are too exhausted for anything else. You’re too busy to dwell on it, you focus on getting things done to ride out the storm and survive. Up here in Virginia, I feel kind of helpless, like I need to be doing something to get ready or to help! It is a strange feeling.
My heart and prayers go out to those affected by both storms for healing and recovery! Seeing the widespread devastation and hearing the stories reduces me to tears and weighs heavily on my heart. It is encouraging to see so many people from all walks of life contributing in some way to assist those in need. May God bless them and protect them as they rebuild their lives!
Xoxo,
Colleen

Hard Bonus: Include the title of a work by the writer T.S. Elliot (The Wasteland)
Easy Bonus: Incorporate the name of a famous explorer’s ship (Cutty Sark-Richard Woodget is probably the best known of all the masters who captained Cutty Sark. His record breaking voyages from Australia during the late 19th century with cargos of wool were avidly followed by the press.)

Nice haiku series full of emotions about the struggles of a storm and the aftermath! KUDOS Dear Earthling! ❤
