A Thousand Dreams

A Thousand Dreams

We sit alone, sad in our in darkened rooms,
overwhelmed by screenshots and stoked up fear.
Too many questions, anxiety looms…
Who am I, and what am I doing here?

We pose as warriors behind our screens,
digeratis in a virtual world.
Uncertain what this reality means…
hoping dreams and desires can be unfurled.

We shed our tears in the depths of the night,
breathing deep, to the wind our troubles cast.
We break away, and run towards the light…
face our future, untethered from the past.

A thousand dreams within me softly burn…
growing more vivid as Earth spins and turns.

Hello and Happy Saturday! This poem was inspired by the Arthur Rimbaud prompt in the weekly challenge. There were so many intriguing lines to choose from, but the one about a thousand dreams really hooked me. I actually wrote this poem BACKWARDS, penning the final couplet of the sonnet and moving back to the starting point.

The French poet Arthur Rimbaud had quite an interesting past, to say the least. Apparently, he was married, but madly in love and in a twisted relationship with another married man who eventually shot him. Many of his works were inspired by this tumultuous relationship. I find it so enlightening reading about the lives of different writers and poets, and about how the events of their lives shaped their works. I am going to try to see if there is a book about him, as I’m ready for a new and different book to read.

As for me, let’s just say I’m sure glad it is the weekend. It was a busy, crazy week. Yesterday I forgot to set my alarm and overslept, but my body actually needed the extra sleep. Today I am grateful for the beautiful weather, but I am also bummed by this time change. The sun sets at 5:02 pm tonight, waaah! It is almost impossible to work in the yard for endless hours on the weekends or get in a long run during the weekdays due to my work schedule. But I’ll make the best of it, and feel grateful when I feel the cooler breezes on my skin and view the golden leaves in my backyard. I hope you have a restful weekend!
