Spill the Wine
frigid winter dawn
bitter winds voice their complaints
as coffee turns cold
sun shines on ice fields
I shiver beneath layers
longing for your warmth
day drags into night
home at last, safe in your arms
let the thaw begin
smooth chocolate kisses
as sweetness melds with hot spice
and we spill the wine
I’ve got a craving
you’re on my grocery list
time to go shopping

Happy Saturday! I’m in a lighthearted mood, even though it is the most frigid day of the year. Right now it’s 18 degrees with a “feels like” temp of -1 degree. Tonight it may go down to a feels like of -15! This is by far the coldest winter we have had since moving to Virginia, and the snow from 2 weeks ago is completely frozen under a layer of ice. The deer can’t even walk on it – there are very few footprints in our backyard after that much time.
I guess you could say this little ditty was actually inspired by the song “Spill the Wine” by Eric Burdon and War. I hadn’t heard it in a long time, so I looked up the lyrics – haha, pretty wild. So that is what steered the direction of my poem on a freezing ass cold day.
Tomorrow is Super Bowl Sunday – which I could care less about, to be honest. But we did go grocery shopping last night, and I got all the ingredients to make my annual Super Bowl Chili: ground turkey, onions, peppers (red, green, jalapeno), beans (kidney, red and black), and assorted spices. I still haven’t taken down my Christmas tree since I had a busy work week of bookkeeping and client catchup. I did manage to get most of my other Christmas decorations off the main floor, but they are sitting in the wine room of the basement waiting to be boxed up. I’ve resolved not to stress out about this, as it is not worth pressuring myself. It will get done eventually. Have a great weekend and stay warm, everyone! Xoxo
Love,
Colleen
