Lifeboat
The waves rise, dark and unrelenting,
weight upon the hollow of my chest.
The wind cuts through my empty soul,
salt stings my lips,
and the sky, a canvas torn by streaks of silver ash.
Then, there is you…
A lifeboat rocking steady in the storm,
wood weathered by time, silent and strong,
ropes knotted with quiet promise of safety.
You reach for me,
hands calloused by time,
eyes reminiscent of a horizon I forgot to chase.
The water wants to take me down,
pull me underneath its surface,
drown me in its endless, shifting sorrow.
But there you are…
You rescue me without words,
without struggle,
with the calmness of your presence,
with the space that allows me to breathe.
And somehow in the midst of the storm,
even as the ocean rants and rages,
I know that I will finally reach that distant shore.
With you, only you…

Happy Saturday! Just a quick rambling of my mind. Ever feel like you’re out there in a raging storm of life, where the waves just keep hitting you and trying to knock you down? Yeah, we have all been there! Well, we all need a proverbial lifeboat when the storms get too intense. The metaphor of the lifeboat can represent whatever you want it to be, it takes you to a place of refuge and peace. In this poem, I just kind of chose the word lifeboat and went with it. No rhyme, no reason LOL.
Spring is just a month away! It has been a wild and cold winter. I haven’t been able to get out much or back to my running just yet. In the past month, I invested in a 15 lb weighted vest to get back into my routine. The first time I fast walked 3 miles and was drenched in sweat. The next time out, I progressed to slow jogging 4 miles! It just keeps getting better, there was absolutely no foot pain during or afterwards. So I’m making slow progress. Getting back to your normal workout routine after foot surgery is no joke. I can’t wait to run again, maybe tomorrow?
