Prodigal Summer
With bated breath, we wait at dark,
Excitement brewing like a spark.
The countdown begins: 3, 2, 1…
Prodigal summer has begun.
Electricity splits the sky,
We scatter fast as shadows fly.
Through darkened yards, we laugh and run…
Prodigal summer has begun.
Behind the shed, I crouch down low;
They call me out—I dash and go.
I kick the can and now I’ve won…
Prodigal summer has begun.
With bated breath, we wait at dark…
Prodigal summer has begun.

Happy Saturday ~ Summer is almost here, and it’s my birthday! The topic immediately took me back to 1971 or 1972, and the excitement of playing kick the can with neighborhood kids. There were no cell phones, just a word of mouth plan to meet up the street on Guilford Avenue for an epic game that had us hiding in alleys, empty lots and neighbor’s yards. Good times!
I began writing this sonnet on the drive to Ocean City Thursday, and finished it up last night. It was sunny and beautiful when we got here, then raining yesterday morning. The clouds cleared in the early afternoon, and we spent the day with friends by the pool drinking strawberry daiquiris. Not a bad way to spend the final day of my big year LOL. Then we had a delicious dinner at Fager’s Island restaurant, and got to watch a breathtaking sunset to the music of Tchaikovsky.
Today we’re heading out around 11 am to Seacrets to celebrate my birthday. My friend Curtis had a cookie cake made with my picture, so thoughtful and sweet of him. We are going to hang out by the water all day, and then have a 9:30 pm tiki party boat ride on the Assawoman Bay which should be fun. I hope I can hang long enough for that, haha! All in all, a fun weekend. Thanks to everyone who sent me nice messages and Facebook posts! I’ll be responding to them tomorrow since today we’ll be hanging at the bay. Xoxo
Love,
Colleen
